Volleyball Gets First-Ever Victory Against D’Youville
HAMBURG, N.Y. – In a game where every Hawk earned at least one kill, the Hilbert College men’s volleyball team captured a three-set United Volleyball Conference sweep over cross-town rival D’Youville College on Wednesday.
Adam Weaver delivered 18 kills and 10 digs from every position on the floor to lead the Hawks to their first-ever victory over the Spartans, going back to 2000, and prevented the visitors from gaining their first league win of the season.
For the first match this year, two Hawks finished with double figure assists. Ryan Ratajczak and David Mellerski shared setting duties as they combined for 31 of Hilbert’s 38 assists. Besides his 12 assists, Mellerski added a team-high 13 digs, five kills and four assisted blocks. Ratajczak was credited with 19 assists, eight digs and three kills.
Andrew Wolbert gave Hilbert an additional presence at the net with six kills and four assisted blocks. Korey Schwab showed up for five kills and the Hawks only solo block.
The scores were close with no more than three points separation the first two sets. Hilbert jumped to a 25-23 opening victory with Weaver earning 10 first-set kills. Hilbert pulled away late in the second set for a 25-19 win and then did the same in the final set (25-18).
D’Youville’s Steve Goedtel led the Spartans with 12 kills while Chris Busha assisted on 24 of his team’s 26 kills. Alex Johnson hustled to 17 digs. D’Youville had three players tally solo blocks and only one set getting credit for an assisted block, but the Spartans did disrupt the Hawks’ attack patterns. Several times D’Youville’s front-line created a wall which deflected Hilbert’s hits back to the Hawk-side of the court.
Hilbert (5-22, 1-9 UVC) returns to action this weekend when they travel to Keuka College. The Hawks face Wells College Saturday, March 22nd at 1pm before they battle Keuka at 3pm. The 3pm game will be streamed live against Keuka.
