Hilbert graduate and current MPA student, Wyleia Miller, was in the bookstore this July to get books for her graduate classes when a rack of orange Hilbert t-shirts caught her eye. She surprised the bookstore manager, Bill Herne, when she said she would like to purchase the entire rack of 30+ orange shirts. When he asked why, he learned that Wyleia worked for the Food Bank of WNY and she planned on donating them for Food Bank volunteers. Wyleia also explained that the Food Bank used to receive orange shirts from a national organization every year in support of Hunger Action Month and “Go Orange Day”, but due to cuts the shirts would not be provided this year.
“My hope is that if I buy some shirts and then someone else buys some shirts, by the time Hunger Action Month is here in September, we’ll have all the orange shirts we will need,” Wyleia said.
With the help of many different departments on campus including, Athletics, Mission Integration, Enrollment Management and Institutional Advancement, Hilbert has provided 200 additional orange shirts for the Food Bank of WNY. On September 20, the Food Bank of WNY will host a Hunger Action Fellowship and that is one opportunity for you to join the Hunger Action Month movement! Hunger Action Month
September is Hunger Action Month. There is a national focus on food insecurity across the United States. The focus in 2014 will be to provide hunger advocacy information to the residents of Buffalo and Erie County. It is important that community leadership is clear on the many community services that are available as a result of food banking activities. One of the best ways to take action in the fight against domestic hunger is to provide people with a fundamental knowledge base, by saturating the community with good information.
