Hilbert Picks Up Another Win; Kumro Lights It Up

kumro three ballALFRED, N.Y. – The Hilbert College men’s basketball team used their depth to grab another win,  77-59, against Alfred State.  Nine different players scored with seven Hawks finding ways to put five or more points in the book in the non-conference road game.

Jerame Owens, who currently is only 49 points away from the 1,000 mark, led a trio of Hawks to post double figures.  The junior forward finished with 19 points, just two more than Jordan Kumro who scored all 17 of his points in the first half.  Kumro was credited with five of Hilbert’s six 3-pointers for the game. Trevor Stark reached for 10 points and passed for seven assists.

Sean Weisansal picked half of Hilbert’s six steals while chipping in nine points and Xavier Major posted six points/5 rebounds while Ryan Bradt gave another solid performance with seven points and five rebounds in 12 minutes of action.  Steve Marcey came off the bench and hit one shot while going three of four at the foul line in the game’s final two minutes of play.

Hilbert was consistent each half finishing at 45.9% field goal shooting.  The Hawks out-rebounded the Pioneers by seven but gave up 17 offensive rebounds.  A-State earned 15 second-chance points in the first half. Hilbert forced 18 turnovers which they converted into 23 points but they also turned the ball over 15 times.

Hilbert jumped out to a 7-0 lead within eighty-one seconds after the tip.  The Hawks began to slowly pull away early in the game but Alfred State pulled with-in three points on two occasions. Those chances of forcing a tie were swatted away with back-to-back-to-back 3-pointers by Jordan Kumro who opened the game shooting 4-of-5 by the time he was rotated out of the line-up at 10:31.

Sean Weisansal‘s traditional three-point play gave Hilbert their 10-point lead again but Alfred fought back to cut the score to 34-29 by the break.  Besides Kumro’s 17 points, Owens and Weisansal each posted seven points at half time.

Hilbert outscored Alfred State 8-0 to start the second period and when A-State finally found the bottom of the net at 16:25, the Hawks held a comfortable double-digit lead 42-30.  All twelve Hilbert players saw court time and found their way to a combined 43 point/18 rebound effort.  Six Hawks were credited with offensive rebounds and as a team, Hilbert out-scored Alfred State 24-10 in the paint.

Hilbert (11-2 overall) returns to Hamburg for two very tough opponents this weekend.   The Hawks (6-1) face Pitt-Greensburg (6-1) Saturday, Jan 17 (4pm) and then have a day off before they host Penn State Behrend who also is currently 6-1.  These three teams sit atop the AMCC league standings with Medaille and Bradford waiting to jump into the mix as those two sit at 5-2.

After this weekend’s games, Hilbert travels to Medaille College next Thursday, January 22 to start the second-half of the AMCC schedule.
