Thank You to Western New York Senior Men’s Basketball
HAMBURG, N.Y. – John Czarnecki, Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at Hilbert College, presented an unexpected tribute to a group of men whose collegiate playing days ended a few decades ago. Since the early 1990’s, an ever changing group of retired men show-up and use the Hafner Recreation Center three times a week.
The Western New York Senior Men’s Basketball players have made a financial donation each month for the last twenty-five years when they began using the Hafner Recreation Center for their weekly organized basketball games. Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday the senior players lace-up their sneakers and assemble teams for half-court basketball games as a way to stay physically active and to maintain a healthy and social life style with their friends.
In May 2015, Hilbert College replaced the old, wooden bleachers which survived continued use since 1978, when the Hafner Recreation Center first opened. The Hawks now have new, electric-driven bleachers which are easier to manage, are an upgrade in comfort and are fitted with a ‘media deck’ for social media exposure during home basketball and volleyball contests.
As a way to thank the men for their financial contribution over all these years and to show appreciation for their role modeling of staying active after retirement, the athletics department gave the naming rights of the media platform to this special group of men.
