Men’s Soccer Qualifies for AMCC Play-offs After Shutout Win

HAMBURG, N.Y. – All three of Hilbert’s seniors earned points this afternoon as the Hawks closed their regular season with a 4-0 victory over Pitt-Bradford in men’s soccer.

Senior Jonathan Davison scored twice, senior Austin Mathis earned his first goal his final season and sophomore Ryan Valentine earned his first shut-out victory.

Senior Matthew Buehlmann assisted on one of Davison’s goals and Davison set-up sophomore Garrett Rehner‘s marker.HilbertGoalie

With the victory, Hilbert improved to 3-5-1 in the Allegheny Mountain Collegiate Conference and moved on into post season.  Bradford closed their 2015 AMCC season 0-9 and 1-14-1 overall.

Hilbert started fast attempting three shots in the game’s first 30-seconds.   At 25:35 Austin Mathis set for a restart kick on the left side, outside the box.  His hard-angled hooking shot went to the keeper, but was mishandled and the ball bounced to the left side of the net.

Hilbert dominated play attempting seven corner kicks and outshot the Panthers 22-7 in the first half but only held a 1-0 advantage by intermission.

It didn’t take long for the Hawksto put it together after half time.  Davison delivered the ball in front of the frame off his crafty long-throw in and at 47:47 Rehner, facing the left sideline, stretched for a high left-footed shot which soared to the upper left of the box.

Less than 50-seconds later, Buehlmann intercepted a pass up field and chipped it high into the box.  Davison redirected the ball past the goalie for Hilbert’s quick 3-0 lead at 48:40.

With less than ten minutes remaining in the game, Davison and Beuhlmann were on a 2-on-1 break away.  Davison used his left foot to angle the ball in opposite direction of the Panther’s last defender.

Bradford finished the match with 17 shots, but all by six were off target.  Hilbert’s Ryan Valentine was credited with those six saves, three in each half.

Rehner, Matthew Barth, Davison and Travis Hicks all attempted six shots while Hicks was the most accurate with four on goal.

With the win, the Hilbert men’s soccer team earned their third post-season appearance in the AMCCs under Jeff Panik‘s guidance.  The sixth-seeded Hawks will travel to the third seeded La Roche College.  Three weeks ago, the Redhawks gathered a 3-0 victory over the visiting Hawks on September 26.
