It is with great pleasure that I announce that Fr. William “Jud” Weiksnar, OFM has been named College Chaplain at Hilbert College. He will assist in developing and ensuring the Catholic Franciscan identity and mission of Hilbert and serving the liturgical, pastoral, and spiritual needs of the entire community, particularly the students.
Fr. Jud is currently Parochial Vicar at Our Lady of Victory Parish and Guardian at St. Patrick Friary. He is deeply rooted in his work for social justice. He is working with a group of Franciscan women and men religious in Western New York called the Franciscan Care for Creation Committee. In Camden, NJ, Fr. Jud was involved with community organizing for nine years in a group called Camden Churches Organized for People. The organization had great success organizing with middle school students, who became the Student Leaders’ Von Nieda Park Task Force. Over the years, he has participated in many marches to protest the School of the Americas in Ft. Benning, Georgia, and the March for Life in Washington, DC. At St. Bonaventure University, Fr. Jud was the first Director of the Franciscan Center for Social Concern from 1999-2005. He has served on many Justice, Peace and Integrity of Creation (JPIC) committees. Currently he is on the Order of Friars Minor Animation Committee for JPIC that meets in Rome, as well as the Holy Name Province JPIC Directorate that meets in Washington, D.C. or New York City.
Fr. Jud has family ties to Hilbert’s namesake. His maternal grandmother was a close friend of Mother Colette Hilbert. Mother Colette and other Sisters would go to his grandmother’s house for hard rolls and coffee after Mass at St. Bernard’s.
Fr. Jud received his Bachelor of Business Administration in Accountancy from the University of Notre Dame in 1979. He earned his J.D. and Ph.D. from the University at Buffalo in 1985 and 1988, respectively. Fr. Jud completed his Master of Divinity at Washington Theological Union in 1994.
Fr. Jud will begin his new role on August 1, 2016. I know you join me in welcoming him to the Hilbert Community.
