Hawks Help at Race for the Cure

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure 5K Run/Walk event took place this past weekend and three Hilbert athletic teams assisted behind-the-scenes, helping to make it another successful event.

Four athletes and a pair of coaches from the women’s basketball, lacrosse and soccer programs assisted in moving the “Packet Pickups” and boxes of t-shirts from the Larkin Center downtown to the Wegman’s grocery store in Amherst June 8th.

The Hilbert Hawks were active prior to race day making sure the participants were ready to race from the Delaware Park starting line to the Buffalo Riverworks finish line on June 11.

“We are honored to help the Susan G. Komen of WNY in any way we can,” said women’s soccer coach Kelly Starchok.  “We stand united for all women affected and will always be in the fight alongside them.”

Coach Melissa Graham (basketball and lacrosse) continued, “our student-athletes give selflessly to their teammates and it is always nice to see them working for a good cause in the community.”

Over 3,000 Western New Yorker showed-up to support the Race for the Cure providing emotional support and financial donations which continue to help fund research and training grant programs at the national level; seventy-five percent of the race’s net proceeds stay in WNY to help vital breast cancer health education and breast cancer screening and treatment programs in the eight counties.
